Ashford Women’s B Team started off their season at home to Actonians Development.
The Tangerines started the game off well, creating some early chances but wouldn’t find the breakthrough until the 25th minute. Where a scintillating piece of wing play by Holly Reid managed to create a yard of space to whip a ball across the face of goal where an onrushing Gel Burgess bundled home to score on her Ashford Town debut.
The opening saw Ashford hit top gear and create a few long distance shooting opportunities which were brilliantly saved by the Actonians Goalkeeper. The biggest chance to double their lead came towards the end of the half where Gel Burgess was played through on goal brilliantly by Maddie Dickenson, only to see her rasping left footed shot brilliantly saved again by the outstanding Actonians keeper.
Ashford dominated large spells in the second half, however were unable to kill off the game due to a mix of heroics by the Actonians Goalkeeper and some unbelievable misses in front of goal by the Ashford attackers.
The second half saw Ashford miss the chance to double their lead a whopping 4 times when the goal was gaping. Despite all their dominance of possession and shots on goal, Ashford’s inability to kill the game off gave Actonians Development the chance to steal a point in the dying seconds.
A poor back pass was latched onto by the Actonians forward who raced through on goal, a brave Jemma Moss managed to throw herself at the feet of the attacker who under pressure only managed to dink the ball a foot wide of the goal.
Seconds later the referee blew his whistle and the game was over, despite a nerve jangling last five minutes, the three points were Ashford Town’s!
Outstanding performances from Goalkeeper Jemma Moss, Goalscorer Gel Burgess and Winger Holly Reid saw the game home for Ashford Town B who go on to face QPR Women’s Development next Sunday 2pm kick off at the QPR first team training complex.
